What are Anabolic Steroids?

An Introduction to Anabolic Steroids

What are anabolic steroids? How do they work? What different types are available? What is the difference between legal and illegal steroids?

When it comes to you need to read and understand as much as possible. This is the only way you can learn how to use them responsibly. The more you know about how steroids work, the better you will be able to judge their safety and efficacy.

Anabolic steroids are drugs similar to male androgenic hormones like testosterone. Athletes and bodybuilders who use steroids can expect to increase weight, strength, power, speed, endurance, and aggressiveness. Steroids are used by track and field athletes in the throwing events, weight lifting, and American football in particular.

How do they work? Anabolic steroids work by binding to testosterone molecules in the bloodstream. A receptor on the muscle cell draws the steroid into the cell and causes the cell to increase its metabolism. Or the steroid may remain free in the bloodstream and diffuse into the cell. Myosin and actin, are proteins that make up muscle. Anabolic steroids help build these proteins.

So anabolic steroids help the muscle cell to make more proteins which results in bigger muscles. The amount of extra growth varies from person to person. This explains why different people taking the same steroid will have different levels of muscle growth.

But taking steroids alone will not build muscle. Heavy resistance and strength training is needed for the anabolic steroids to really do their job in the body. How well a steroid works in the body depends on how many free receptor sites exist in your muscles. Strength training increases these and makes anabolic steroids work better.

As far as scientists are concerned the jury is still out as to exactly how and why anabolic steroids work and what long-term effects (if any) they have on the body. Research is split into two camps as far as benefits in terms of performance enhancement are concerned. However, most athletes who use them attest to their supreme performance enhancing benefits.

Some athletes have reported that once they are off the anabolic steroids it is more difficult to maintain their strength but this reverse effect has not be conclusively proven. On the plus side athletes who use anabolic steroids see faster injury recovery time and less susceptibility to inflammation in the muscles after exercise.

Anabolic steroids do decrease the amount of testosterone that is secreted by the body. Once you stop taking them you will have less male hormone than usual and some athletes report losing size and muscle more quickly.

This may cause a problem in some athletes who have grown used to their increased strength and size. Athletes who want to use anabolic steroids should not do so for long periods of time. They suppress the immune system and may cause bad effects on your health if rest periods are not taken.
